THE BLEEDING TREE

By Angus Cerini

9-19 December 2020 | TANDANYA NATIONAL ABORIGINAL CULTURAL INSTITUTE

A shot rings out across the night. A mother and her daughters take revenge on a life of misery, greeting the man of the house with a crack on the shins and a bullet in the neck.

But what do they do with the body?

Capturing the danger and isolation of the Australian outback, Angus Cerini’s multi award-winning play The Bleeding Tree is a contemporary gothic tale of revenge that is fierce, poetic, heart breaking and uncomfortably funny.

This is the South Australian premiere of The Bleeding Tree.

Featuring: Elena Carapetis, Annabel Matheson and Miranda Daughtry | Director: Corey McMahon | Production Designer: Victoria Lamb | Lighting Designer: Chris Petridis | Composer: Jason Sweeney | Producer: Manda Flett

WHAT THE REVIEWERS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT THE BLEEDING TREE

“An outstanding creative team have taken Angus Cerini’s splendidly compact, stylistically inventive text and created 58 minutes of galvanising theatre. The Bleeding Tree is an exceptional play and Theatre Republic have brought it into vivid being. In an awful year this production is a highlight”

Murray Bramwell, Limelight Magazine

The Bleeding Tree is a sensationally brilliant piece of contemporary Australian theatre and its creator, playwright Angus Cerini, sits up there in genius territory. This has been a much interrupted production thanks to the perversities of Covid19 but it now emerges not only as worth waiting for but as an award-worthy and unforgettable theatrical sensation”

Samela Harris, The Barefoot Review

“Enterprising Adelaide company Theatre Republic is presenting the local premiere of Melbourne playwright Angus Cerini’s much-awarded The Bleeding Tree. It would be nothing without a cast that’s up to the challenge, and what a fine cast director Corey McMahon has put together. Elena Carapetis is astounding as the mother, utterly commanding (whether speaking or not), and with an intense, steely gaze. The daughters are played with equal intensity by Miranda Daughtry and Annabel Matheson. They are victims who become victors”
